Reply or Interannual Southern Hemispheric Atmospheric Variability in the NCEP reanalysis between 1980 and 2002
نویسنده
چکیده
Climate Variability in the Southern Hemisphere is receiving increasing attention due to both the large greenhouse gas forced response that many climate model exhibit in polar regional impacts of the SAM in a coarse resolution coupled climate model. The overwhelming dominance of this mode in the model's oceanic, sea ice and atmospheric interannual to decadal variability led us to the hypothesis that most of the interannual climate variability of the real world would also be associated with the SAM. This statement was contested in a recent commentary by a White (this issue) who claims that the Antarctic Circumpolar Wave

Interannual variations in Antarctic precipitation related to El NioSouthern Oscillation
The accurate estimation of Antarctic precipitation variability is an essential component in understanding lobal sea level fluctuations; direct measurement techniques, however, are replete with practical difficulties. In this study, net precipitation (precipitation minus sublimation) for the Antarctic continent is computed for 1980-1994 using operational numerical analyses obtained from the ECMW...
متن کاملSea Surface Temperature Variability along the Path of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current
The spatial and temporal distributions of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) are investigated, using monthly data from the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis for the period 1980–2004. Patterns of atmospheric forcing are identified in observations of sea level pressure and air–sea heat fluxes. It is found that a significant fraction of SST variability in the ACC...
متن کاملSensitivity of US air quality to mid-latitude cyclone frequency and implications of 1980–2006 climate change
We show that the frequency of summertime midlatitude cyclones tracking across eastern North America at 40–50 N (the southern climatological storm track) is a strong predictor of stagnation and ozone pollution days in the eastern US. The NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis, going back to 1948, shows a significant long-term decline in the number of summertime mid-latitude cyclones in that track starting in 1980...
متن کاملTHE PACIFIC SECTOR HADLEY AND WALKER CIRCULATION IN HISTORICAL MARINE WIND ANALYSES Potential for Reconstruction from Proxy Data
We investigate the historical variation of the wintertime Pacific marine sector meridional atmospheric circulation, using simple diagnostics calculated from a statistical analysis of 140 years of surface wind data. Intensity of the wintertime expression of the Hadley circulation, as expressed by a wind divergence index, varies interannually and secularly. In agreement with previous studies, int...
متن کاملInterannual variability associated with Semiannual Oscillation in southern high latitudes
[1] The annual and interannual variations of sea level pressure (SLP) over the Southern Ocean are investigated using the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data from 1968 to 2005. Results show that the weakening of the Semiannual Oscillation (SAO) has continued to present day but does not occur homogeneously across all longitudes. While the second harmonic of SLP has decreased over the South Pacific Ocean, i...
